Enets Alphabet at a Glance

  • Enets (also called Yenisey Samoyed or Enet) is a critically endangered Samoyedic language [1] of the Yenisei River region in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Siberia, Russia. The language exists in two closely related varieties: Forest Enets (Пэ-Бае / Pe-Bae, ISO 639-3: enf) and Tundra Enets (Сомату / Somatu, ISO 639-3: enh). Fewer than 100 speakers remain across both varieties combined
  • The Enets Cyrillic alphabet has 30 letters including the distinctive special character Ӈ (N with descender), representing the velar nasal /ŋ/ sound — the same phoneme as the "ng" in "sing". This character is shared across the Samoyedic writing tradition, appearing in Nganasan, Selkup and Nenets orthographies as well [3]
  • The INEL Project at the University of Hamburg [1] has created the most comprehensive linguistic corpus for Enets, with annotated texts and audio recordings that represent the primary academic resource for this critically endangered language. The corpus documents both Forest and Tundra Enets varieties
  • The Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) [2] at SOAS University of London holds primary field documentation of Enets, contributing to global efforts to preserve recordings and analyses of this language before the last speakers are lost. ELAR archives provide access to Enets materials for researchers and heritage community members worldwide
  • The Institute for Linguistic Studies (ILS) of the Russian Academy of Sciences [3] in St Petersburg has conducted sustained fieldwork on Enets and other Samoyedic languages, producing grammatical descriptions and phonological analyses that underpin scientific understanding of Enets within the Uralic language family
  • Enets belongs to the Northern Samoyedic subgroup of Uralic, related to Nenets and Nganasan, and more distantly to the Southern Samoyedic languages Selkup. Enets and Nganasan together form the most endangered branch of the Samoyedic family [1]

Enets Vowels

Enets has 10 vowel letters: А, Е, Ё, И, О, У, Ы, Э, Ю, Я. These represent the standard Cyrillic vowel system, including the distinctive Cyrillic letters Ё (yo) and Ы (back unrounded vowel). The INEL corpus [1] documents Enets vowel phonology in annotated texts.

Enets vowel phonology is rich, with length distinctions and laryngeal contrasts — features typical of Samoyedic languages. The ILS RAS [3] has published studies of Forest Enets vowel harmony and the vowel system of both Enets varieties, while ELAR [2] preserves audio recordings demonstrating the spoken vowel qualities of the language.

Enets Consonants

Enets has 18 consonant letters including the key special consonant Ӈ (N with descender — velar nasal /ŋ/). The absence of letters such as Ж (Zh) and Ц (Ts) reflects the phonological inventory of Enets, which lacks the corresponding sounds [3].

Enets has an ejective consonant system — glottalised stops that are a hallmark of Samoyedic languages but are difficult to represent in standard Cyrillic orthography. The INEL Project [1] has worked on conventions for representing these sounds in corpus materials. ELAR [2] holds audio recordings documenting the full Enets consonant system as produced by native and heritage speakers.

Enets Special Characters

The primary special character of Enets is Ӈ (N with descender) — the velar nasal /ŋ/ shared with Nganasan, Selkup, and Nenets. The soft sign Ь and hard sign Ъ function as in standard Russian Cyrillic. [3]

The INEL Project [1] at Hamburg University ensures that Ӈ and other Enets characters are correctly represented in the digital corpus. ELAR [2] supports the use of these characters in archived materials, making the Enets orthography accessible in digital language documentation systems.

Enets Digits

Enets uses Arabic numerals (0–9). The native Enets number words: нул (0), би (1), сёа (2), нагур (3), тэ (4), самна (5), маты (6), сёдна (7), бидет (8), тэдет (9).

The Enets numeral system is vigesimal (base-20) in its higher numbers — a feature shared with Nenets. Words like нагур (3) are cognates across Samoyedic languages, with Nganasan нагур and Selkup näγür showing the shared Uralic ancestry [3]. The INEL corpus [1] documents Enets numerals in authentic spoken contexts.

Complete Enets Alphabet

All 30 Enets letters in alphabetical order. The compact alphabet reflects the focused phonological inventory of this Samoyedic language, which lacks several letters common in Russian Cyrillic while adding the key special character Ӈ.

The INEL Project [1] and ILS RAS [3] have both worked to standardise and document this alphabet. ELAR [2] holds materials in both Forest and Tundra Enets varieties, preserving the full range of Enets written and spoken forms for future researchers and the Enets community.
