Ikalanga Language at a Glance

  • Ikalanga (Kalanga, ISO 639-3: kck) is spoken by approximately 400,000–500,000 people in Zimbabwe's Matabeleland South Province (Bulilima, Mangwe Districts) and northeastern Botswana (Francistown area, Tati District). In Zimbabwe the language is called Ikalanga; in Botswana it is Kalanga [1]
  • Ikalanga is classified as a member of the Shona group of Bantu languages, making it the southwesternmost Shona language. It is most closely related to Karanga Shona, and shares significant phonological features — including the pf affricate and sv cluster — with Shona proper [2]
  • The Shona-group consonants pf (labiodental affricate) and sv (sibilant-labiodental cluster) are distinctive to the Shona language group and not found in East African Bantu languages like Swahili or Kikuyu. The numeral zipfumbamwe (nine) contains the pf affricate; zisvanu (seven) and zisvere (eight) contain the sv cluster [2]
  • Ikalanga numerals 1–9 all carry the zi- noun-class prefix: zimwe (1), zibeli (2), zitatu (3), zine (4), zitanu (5), zitanhatu (6), zisvanu (7), zisvere (8), zipfumbamwe (9). Only gumi (ten) lacks the zi- prefix, paralleling the pan-Bantu ten root (Swahili kumi, Zulu ishumi) [3]
  • In Botswana, Kalanga (Ikalanga) is a recognized minority language and one of the languages covered by the Botswana Society for the Promotion of Kalanga Language (SPILL). Botswana's constitution recognizes several minority languages, and Kalanga has received some official support in education and media [1]
  • Ikalanga is historically significant as the language of the Kalanga people, who are believed to be the descendants of the builders of Great Zimbabwe — the stone-walled settlement that was the capital of a powerful medieval state. The Kalanga were later displaced southward by Shona and Ndebele expansion [3]
  • The language is tonal (high and low tones) and uses the five-vowel Bantu system (a, e, i, o, u). Like all Shona-group languages, tones are not written in the standard orthography. Ikalanga has no click consonants, unlike neighboring Ndebele which borrowed clicks from Zulu [2]

Ikalanga Consonants

The Ikalanga consonant inventory shares features with the Shona language group: pf (labiodental affricate), sv (sibilant-labiodental cluster), zh (voiced postalveolar fricative), sh, and the standard Bantu prenasalized stops (mb, nd, ng, nj, nk, ny). These Shona-group consonants are not found in East African Bantu languages [2].

Ikalanga Vowels

Ikalanga has five vowel qualities (a, e, i, o, u). The zi- prefix on most numerals shows the pervasiveness of i in grammatical prefixes. Ikalanga is tonal — tones are not written in standard orthography but affect meaning throughout the vocabulary [2].

Digits (1–10 in Ikalanga)

Ikalanga numerals 1–9 all carry the zi- noun-class prefix: zimwe (1), zibeli (2), zitatu (3). The Shona-group sv cluster appears in zisvanu (7) and zisvere (8), and the pf affricate in zipfumbamwe (9). Only gumi (10) lacks the prefix, cognate with Swahili kumi and Zulu ishumi [3].
