Hindi Alphabet at a Glance

  • Hindi is the official language of the Government of India and of 9 Hindi-belt states — spoken by approximately 490–600 million people as first or second language, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world [1]
  • Written in the Devanagari script (देवनागरी) — an abugida of 33 consonants and 11 independent vowels, written left to right. Each consonant carries an inherent short vowel that is modified or suppressed by vowel signs (matras) or the halant mark [2]
  • Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world by native speakers. It is the primary language of the Hindi Belt: UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh [4]
  • Hindi is a scheduled language under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India and one of 22 officially recognised national languages. It is also the associate official language for government communication alongside English [3]
  • Barakhadi (बाराखड़ी) — the Hindi syllable chart — shows all 33 consonants combined with 13 vowel forms, producing 429 unique syllables that form the foundation of Hindi reading and writing [5]
  • Hindi vocabulary is predominantly Sanskrit-derived (tatsama and tadbhava words), with significant borrowings from Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Portuguese and English — reflecting India's historical position at the crossroads of civilisations
  • The Devanagari script also has Devanagari Extended and Vedic Extensions character sets used for specialised scholarly and classical texts

Hindi (हिन्दी; ISO 639-3: hin) is the official language of India and of nine Hindi-Belt states, spoken by approximately 490–600 million people worldwide. [1] It is written in Devanagari script (देवनागरी) — a left-to-right abugida of 33 consonants and 11 independent vowels. [2]

Hindi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European, standardised on the Khari Boli dialect of Delhi and mutually intelligible with Urdu. [4] A key feature is the Barakhadi (बाराखड़ी): the syllable chart combining all 33 consonants with 13 vowel forms to produce 429 syllables — the traditional foundation of Hindi literacy. [5]

Hindi Consonant Letters (व्यंजन)

The Hindi alphabet has 33 consonants (व्यंजन) arranged in five phonetic groups (vargas) by place of articulation — velars, palatals, retroflexes, dentals, and labials — plus four semivowels and four sibilants/aspirates. Each consonant carries an inherent /a/ vowel.

Each consonant can be combined with any of the 13 vowel matras to form syllables, displayed in the Barakhadi chart below. The Devanagari consonants occupy Unicode U+0915–U+0939.

Hindi Independent Vowels (स्वर)

Hindi has 11 independent vowel letters (स्वर) used at the beginning of words or syllables — अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ. When a vowel follows a consonant, its independent form is replaced by a smaller vowel sign (matra) written around the consonant.

The vowel अ (a) is special: it is the inherent vowel of every consonant and has no independent matra form. The anusvara (ं) and visarga (ः) are auxiliary marks used in combination with vowels and consonants.

Hindi Vowel Signs (मात्राएँ)

Hindi uses 12 vowel signs (matras, मात्राएँ) — diacritical marks attached to consonants to indicate which vowel follows. Each matra modifies the inherent /a/ sound of a consonant, producing a different syllable.

The i-matra (ि) is unique: it is written before the consonant it modifies, even though the sound comes after. The anusvara (ं) and visarga (ः) are also included as essential diacritical marks in Hindi writing.

Hindi / Devanagari Digits (०–९)

Hindi uses Devanagari numerals (०–९) in formal, traditional and official contexts. These digits occupy Unicode U+0966–U+096F. The concept of zero originated in ancient India, making these numerals historically significant.

In everyday and informal use, Hindi speakers also widely use the common Arabic-Indic numerals (0–9). Both digit sets are considered standard in Hindi writing, with Devanagari numerals preferred in formal literature and official documents.

Devanagari Digits:

Special Characters & Punctuation

Hindi uses the Devanagari danda (।) as the full stop and the double danda (॥) to mark the end of a verse or section. These marks are distinctive features of Brahmic-script writing traditions.

The Om symbol (ॐ) and the chandrabindu (ँ) are important in religious and literary Hindi. The Indian Rupee sign (₹) is used in all modern Hindi financial writing.

Hindi Barakhadi Chart (बाराखड़ी चार्ट)

The Hindi Barakhadi (बाराखड़ी) shows every combination of the 33 consonants with all 13 vowel forms — 429 syllables in total. Each cell is a standalone Hindi syllable, the fundamental building block of Hindi words. [5]

Read by row (consonant) and column (vowel): scroll right to see all 13 vowel forms. Mastering the Barakhadi is the traditional method of learning to read and write Hindi fluently.
