Dhivehi Alphabet at a Glance

  • Dhivehi is the official language of the Maldives, spoken by approximately 340,000 people across the Maldivian atolls [1]
  • Written in the Thaana script, a unique right-to-left abugida with 33 consonant letters and 11 vowel diacritics (fili) [2]
  • Thaana is written right to left and is unique among writing systems in that its consonant letters are derived from numerals — the first 9 from Arabic numerals and the next 9 from Indic numerals [2]
  • Dhivehi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European family, closely related to Sinhala of Sri Lanka — both descended from Elu Prakrit, an ancient south Indian Prakrit [3]
  • Dhivehi is the sole official language of the Republic of Maldives as enshrined in the 2008 Maldivian Constitution [4]
  • The Thaana alphabet contains 24 native Dhivehi letters plus 9 Arabic-derived letters for religious and loanword vocabulary — reflecting centuries of Islamic influence
  • Dhivehi vowels are written as diacritics called fili placed above or below the consonant letters — a unique adaptation of the abjad writing tradition

Dhivehi (also written Divehi) is the official language of the Republic of Maldives, spoken by approximately 340,000 people across the atolls of the Indian Ocean [1]. It is written in the Thaana script (U+0780–U+07BF) — a unique right-to-left abugida with 33 consonant letters and vowel diacritics called fili [2].

Dhivehi belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family, and is most closely related to Sinhala of Sri Lanka — both descend from Elu Prakrit, an ancient form of Apabhramsha. Dhivehi is classified within the Insular Indo-Aryan subgroup [3].

Thaana is remarkable for its unique letter origins: the first nine letters are derived from Arabic-Indic numerals and the following nine from Hindu-Arabic numerals — an origin unlike any other writing system. The later letters were added for Arabic loanwords, reflecting centuries of Islamic cultural influence in the Maldives.

Dhivehi Thaana Consonants

The Thaana script has 33 consonant letters — 24 native Dhivehi letters plus 9 letters derived from Arabic for loanword vocabulary. Each consonant must carry a vowel diacritic (fili) to be pronounced.

The script is written right to left, and unlike most abugidas, consonants have no inherent vowel — a vowel diacritic or sukun is always required. Letters are unique to Dhivehi and not shared with any other writing system.

Dhivehi Vowel Diacritics (Fili)

Thaana uses 10 vowel diacritics (fili) placed above or below consonant letters, plus the sukun mark which indicates no vowel. Vowels indicate 5 vowel qualities each in short and long form.

Unlike Devanagari, Thaana consonants have no inherent vowel — every consonant must carry a fili or sukun. Vowels represent /a/, /aa/, /i/, /ii/, /u/, /uu/, /e/, /ey/, /o/, /oa/ — covering a rich vowel inventory across the 5 Dhivehi vowel positions.
