Maldivian Alphabet at a Glance

  • Maldivian is the sole official language of the Republic of Maldives as enshrined in the 2008 Constitution — also known as Dhivehi (ދިވެހި), meaning "Island language" [1]
  • Written in the Thaana script, a unique right-to-left abugida with 33 consonant letters and 10 vowel diacritics (fili) plus sukun [2]
  • Maldivian belongs to the Insular Indo-Aryan subgroup of Indo-Iranian, making it a distant relative of Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and other South Asian languages, and closest to Sinhala [3]
  • Spoken by approximately 340,000 people across the atolls of the Maldives, an island nation of ~1,200 coral islands in the Indian Ocean [4]
  • The Thaana script is unique in that its first 9 letters are derived from Arabic-Indic numerals and the next 9 from Hindu-Arabic numerals — an origin found in no other script
  • Thaana consonants have no inherent vowel — every consonant must carry a vowel fili or sukun, making Maldivian writing fully vowelled unlike Arabic or Hebrew
  • Maldivian has been significantly influenced by Arabic, Persian, Malayalam, and Portuguese — reflecting the Maldives' history as a key node of Indian Ocean trade routes

Maldivian (also called Dhivehi — ދިވެހި) is the sole official language of the Republic of Maldives, spoken by approximately 340,000 people in the Indian Ocean [1]. It uses the Thaana script (U+0780–U+07BF), a right-to-left abugida of 33 consonant letters with vowel diacritics called fili [2].

Maldivian belongs to the Insular Indo-Aryan subgroup of the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European. Its closest relative is Sinhala (Sri Lanka), both descending from Elu Prakrit [3]. It is classified as a distinct language from all mainland Indo-Aryan languages.

The Thaana script is unlike any other writing system in the world — its letter shapes were created from numerals. Maldivian also has distinctive regional dialects across the atolls, with the southern Addu and Huvadhu varieties being most divergent from Standard Maldivian spoken in Malé.

Maldivian Thaana Consonants

Thaana has 33 consonant letters — 24 native Maldivian letters plus 9 derived from Arabic for loanwords. All are written right to left. Each consonant requires a vowel fili or sukun to be complete.

The first 9 native letters (ހ–ޅ) derive their shapes from Arabic-Indic numerals; the next 9 (ކ–ޗ) from Hindu-Arabic numerals. The remaining letters were adapted from Arabic to accommodate Islamic religious vocabulary.

Maldivian Vowel Diacritics (Fili)

Maldivian uses 10 vowel diacritics (fili) written above or below consonants, plus the sukun which marks absence of a vowel. Fili represent 5 vowel qualities in short and long form: /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/.

Since Thaana consonants have no inherent vowel, the fili system makes Maldivian writing fully phonemic — every syllable is explicitly marked, giving the script greater precision than Arabic or Hebrew where vowels are often omitted.
