Nepali Alphabet at a Glance

  • Nepali (नेपाली, ISO 639-1: ne) is the official language of Nepal and one of the 22 scheduled languages of India; it is spoken by approximately 17 million native speakers and over 32 million total speakers across Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and parts of northeastern India [1]
  • Nepali uses the Devanagari script — the same Brahmic abugida as Hindi, Sanskrit, and Marathi — written left to right; each consonant carries an inherent vowel a, modified by vowel matras or suppressed by the halant [3]
  • The Nepali Devanagari alphabet has 11 independent vowels and 33 consonants in the traditional Brahmic varga (group) arrangement — velar, palatal, retroflex, dental, and labial series — shared with Hindi and Sanskrit [3]
  • A distinctive feature of Nepali Devanagari is the chandrabindu (ँ) — a nasal diacritic used specifically for nasalised vowels in Nepali words such as गाउँ (gaauN, village), distinguishing Nepali orthography from Hindi
  • Nepali is the national language of Nepal under the Constitution of Nepal 2015 and is also one of the 22 official scheduled languages of India, where it has official status in Sikkim and parts of West Bengal and Assam [4] [5]
  • Nepali belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-Iranian within Indo-European; it is closely related to Hindi, Maithili, and the other Pahari languages of the central Himalayan region, with Sanskrit as its classical ancestor [2]
  • The Nepali Barakhadi (बाराखडी) shows all 33 consonants combined with 12 vowel forms — the complete syllable chart fundamental to Devanagari literacy in Nepal, shared with Hindi and Sanskrit Barakhadi traditions [6]

Nepali (नेपाली, ISO 639-1: ne) is the official language of Nepal and the mother tongue of approximately 17 million speakers, with over 32 million total speakers across Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and northeastern India [1]. It uses the Devanagari script — the same Brahmic abugida as Hindi, Marathi, and Sanskrit — written left to right.

Nepali belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European and is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India [5]. The Nepali Devanagari alphabet has 11 independent vowels and 33 consonants in the classical Brahmic varga arrangement [3]. A distinctive feature unique to Nepali orthography is the chandrabindu (ँ) for nasalised vowels.

Nepali Independent Vowels

Nepali has 11 independent vowels in Devanagari — used when a vowel begins a syllable without a preceding consonant. The system includes short/long pairs for a, i, u; the diphthongs e, ai, o, au; and the vocalic R (ऋ) inherited from Sanskrit.

Nepali uses the anusvara (ं) for nasalisation and the chandrabindu (ँ) for nasalised vowels — a feature that distinguishes Nepali orthography from Hindi, where chandrabindu usage is less systematic.

Nepali Consonants

Nepali has 33 consonants in the standard Brahmic varga arrangement — velar (क–ङ), palatal (च–ञ), retroflex (ट–ण), dental (त–न), and labial (प–म) series, followed by semivowels (य, र, ल, व) and sibilants/aspirate (श, ष, स, ह).

Nepali preserves the full Devanagari consonant set including retroflex consonants (ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण), the three sibilants (श, ष, स), and voiced aspirates (घ, झ, ढ, ध, भ) — making the Nepali consonant inventory identical to Hindi and Sanskrit in its Devanagari representation.

Nepali Vowel Signs (Matras)

Vowel signs (matras) are diacritical marks written around Devanagari consonants to indicate vowels other than the inherent a. They include the anusvara (ं) for nasalisation and the chandrabindu (ँ), uniquely prominent in Nepali orthography for marking nasalised vowels in common Nepali words like गाउँ (village) and आउँछु (I come).

The halant (्) suppresses the inherent vowel, enabling conjunct consonants. The visarga (ः) appears mainly in Sanskrit-origin words in Nepali formal and literary registers.

Devanagari Digits (०–९)

Nepali uses Devanagari numerals (०–९) corresponding to the Western Arabic numerals 0–9. These are the same digits used in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Marathi — the historical ancestors of the modern numeral system used worldwide.

Nepali Barakhadi Chart (बाराखडी)

The Nepali Barakhadi (बाराखडी) shows every combination of the 33 consonants with all 12 vowel forms — the complete syllable chart fundamental to Devanagari literacy in Nepal. [6]

Read by row (consonant) and column (vowel): scroll right to see all 12 vowel forms. The Nepali Barakhadi follows the same Brahmic tradition as the Hindi and Sanskrit Barakhadi, reflecting the shared Devanagari heritage of the Indo-Aryan languages of South Asia.
