Pardhan (also known as Pradhan) is a Dravidian language of the Gondi group spoken in Central India. The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) [1] documents Pardhan as a South-Central Dravidian language. The Endangered Languages Project [2] and ELAR SOAS [3] support international documentation of Pardhan written in Devanagari.
Pardhan uses the 33 Devanagari consonants [1], arranged in four stop series (dental, retroflex, palatal, velar) with voiced, voiceless, aspirated and unaspirated variants. The retroflex series (ट, ठ, ड, ढ) is distinctive to South Asian Dravidian and Indo-Aryan languages.
The CIIL [1] and ELAR SOAS [3] document the Pardhan consonant inventory as characteristic of the Gondi South-Central Dravidian phonological tradition.
The 13 Devanagari independent vowels [1] used in Pardhan include short/long pairs (अ/आ, इ/ई, उ/ऊ), diphthongs (ऐ, औ), vocalic r (ऋ), anusvara (अं) and visarga (अः). Independent vowels are used when a vowel begins a syllable.
ELAR SOAS [3] archives Pardhan vowel data, and the Endangered Languages Project [2] maintains records of Pardhan phonology as part of its endangered language documentation.
Devanagari vowel signs (matras) are attached to consonants to modify the inherent "a" vowel in Pardhan. The halant (्) suppresses the vowel entirely [1], enabling consonant clusters characteristic of Gondi Dravidian phonology.
CIIL Mysore [1] and ELAR SOAS [3] document the Devanagari matra system as essential to writing Pardhan and other Gondi-group languages accurately.
Pardhan uses Devanagari numerals [1] (०–९), corresponding to Arabic numerals 0–9. These numerals are shared across Devanagari-script languages of South Asia and are used in Pardhan literacy and documentation materials.
The Endangered Languages Project [2] and ELAR SOAS [3] archive Pardhan language materials that include numerical vocabulary as part of their documentation of this Gondi Dravidian language.
The complete Pardhan Devanagari alphabet in standard Brahmic order — vowels followed by consonants. The same Devanagari abugida used for Pradhan applies here, as Pardhan and Pradhan are the same language under different spellings.
CIIL Mysore [1], the Endangered Languages Project [2] and ELAR SOAS [3] document Pardhan as a Gondi Dravidian language of Central India — the bard language of the Gond tribal tradition.
