Marathi Alphabet at a Glance

  • Marathi (मराठी; ISO 639-1: mr) is the official language of Maharashtra and Goa, spoken by approximately 83 million people — the third most spoken language in India and one of 22 scheduled languages of the Indian Constitution [1]
  • Marathi uses the Devanagari script (देवनागरी) — an abugida of 34 consonants and 14 independent vowels, written left to right. Marathi has one more consonant than Hindi: the unique retroflex lateral ळ (La) [2]
  • The Marathi Barakhadi (बाराखडी) shows all 34 consonants combined with 13 vowel forms — 442 unique syllables forming the foundation of Marathi literacy [5]
  • Marathi is one of the oldest attested Indo-Aryan languages — the earliest Marathi inscriptions date to the 11th century CE, and Marathi literature includes the great saint-poets Dnyaneshwar (13th century) and Tukaram (17th century)
  • The unique Marathi letter ळ (La) — a retroflex lateral — distinguishes Marathi from Hindi. It appears in common Marathi words like काळ (kaaL, time/black), पाणी (paaNi, water) with ण (Na), and ओळख (oLakh, acquaintance)
  • Marathi also has the distinctive letter ण (Na) — a retroflex nasal — very common in everyday Marathi words like पाणी (paaNi, water), आणखी (aaNkhi, more), and बाण (baan, arrow) [2]
  • Each Devanagari consonant carries an inherent /a/ vowel modified by vowel signs (matras) or suppressed by the halant (्) for consonant clusters in Marathi writing [2]

Marathi (मराठी; ISO 639-1: mr) is the official language of Maharashtra and Goa, spoken by approximately 83 million people — making it the third most spoken language in India. [1] It is written in Devanagari script (देवनागरी) — a left-to-right abugida shared with Hindi, Sanskrit, and Nepali. [2]

Marathi has 34 consonants — one more than Hindi — including the unique retroflex lateral ळ (La), which distinguishes Marathi from all other modern Devanagari-script languages. A key feature is the Marathi Barakhadi (बाराखडी): the complete syllable chart of 34 consonants combined with 13 vowel forms, producing 442 syllables — the traditional foundation of Marathi literacy. [5]

Marathi Consonant Letters (व्यंजन)

The Marathi alphabet has 34 consonants (व्यंजन) — the standard 33 Devanagari consonants plus the unique ळ (La), a retroflex lateral found in Marathi and Vedic Sanskrit. Consonants are arranged in five phonetic vargas by place of articulation.

Each consonant carries an inherent /a/ vowel. The unique ळ (La) appears in common Marathi words: काळ (kaaL, time), वेळ (vel, moment), खेळ (khel, game), ओळख (oLakh, acquaintance). This letter is absent from modern Hindi.

Marathi Independent Vowels (स्वर)

Marathi has 14 independent vowels (स्वर) — the 11 standard Devanagari vowels plus आई (aai, mother — written with आ), अं (anusvara vowel), अः (visarga vowel), and the rare ॠ (long vocalic rr from Vedic Sanskrit).

The vowel अ (a) is the inherent vowel of every Marathi consonant. Notably, in Marathi the inherent short /a/ at the end of a word is often not pronounced — unlike Hindi where it may be lightly voiced. This is one of the key phonological differences between Marathi and Hindi.

Marathi Vowel Signs (मात्रा)

Marathi uses 12 vowel signs (matras, मात्रा) — diacritical marks attached to consonants to indicate which vowel follows. Each matra modifies the inherent /a/ sound of a Marathi consonant.

The i-matra (ि) is unique: it is written before the consonant it modifies. The anusvara (ं) marks nasalisation — very common in Marathi words. The halant (्) suppresses the inherent vowel for consonant clusters. These are the same matras as in Hindi.

Marathi / Devanagari Digits (०–९)

Marathi uses Devanagari numerals (०–९) in formal, literary and official contexts. Marathi number words: एक (1), दोन (2), तीन (3), चार (4), पाच (5), सहा (6), सात (7), आठ (8), नऊ (9), दहा (10).

In everyday and informal use, Marathi speakers widely use Arabic-Indic numerals (0–9). Both sets are standard in Marathi writing, with Devanagari numerals preferred in formal literature and official publications.

Devanagari Digits

Special Characters and Punctuation

Marathi uses the Devanagari Danda (।) as the full stop and the Double Danda (॥) to mark the end of a verse or section — shared across all Devanagari-script languages.

The Anusvara (ं) is very common in Marathi — marking nasalisation in words like रंग (rang, colour), मंदिर (mandir, temple), and सांगणे (saangNe, to tell). The Indian Rupee sign (₹) is used in all modern Marathi financial writing.

Marathi Barakhadi Chart (बाराखडी चार्ट)

The Marathi Barakhadi (बाराखडी) shows every combination of the 34 consonants with all 13 vowel forms — 442 syllables in total. Each cell is a standalone Marathi syllable, the fundamental building block of Marathi words. [5]

The Marathi Barakhadi includes the unique ळ (La) row — distinguishing the Marathi Barakhadi from the Hindi one, which has only 33 consonant rows. Scroll right to see all 13 vowel forms.
